Minigun mount2103 viewsBefore the mass-produced minigun pods became available, the SUU-11A miniguns were installed in locally fabricated mounting. There are a couple of point of interest in this photo. Please note the really cool hats and sidearms that the airmen are wearing, and note that they are wearing leather combat boots, rather than the leather and nylon jungle boots that became later issue. Gun pods1444 viewsThis view of the cargo area, looking aft, gives a good view of the three minigun pods and the boxes of ammunition along the floor. Once the Gunship concept moved from concept into reality, the miniguns were mounted in self-contained pods. Ammo still came in cans (foreground) and flares (upper left) were stored upright. I believe they were tossed by hand. (US Air Force photo.)spectregunner

Minigun firing1763 viewsView from the rear looking forward as one of the miniguns is firing. If you look carefully at the top center of the picture you can see where the muzzle flash has illuminated the face of one of the gunners. (US Air Force photo.)spectregunner

Pilot's gun sight2002 viewsThe pilot's gunsight in the AC-47 was the Mark 20 mod 4, which was "liberated" from the graveyard of older A-1 Skyraiders. One of the really great aspects of the entire gunship program is the way in which off-the-shelf technologies have been adapted for use in this diverse fleet of aircraft. Terry and the Pirates2179 viewsBefore the C-47 became the AC-47, it was given the short-lived designation FC-47, standing for fighter-cargo. Only four FC-47's came equipped with ten M-2 Browing WWII-era .30 calibre machine guns, with four mounted to fire through holes in the aft cargo door, two in the open doorway, and two in each of the last two windows forward of the cargo doorway. Gun pod1775 viewsClose up view of the minigun pod mount on the AC-47. Each could fire at 3,000 or 6,000 rounds per minute, and the AC-47 could fire all three guns at the same time, although this was rarely done. (US Air Force photo.)spectregunner

Spooky Business Card2200 viewsThis business card was produced by one of the pilots from the 4th SOS at DaNang, and andfuls were often tossed out of the aircraft over friendly locations. Many a Marine or Army troop brought one of these cards home as a souvenir. Photo courtesy of, and copyright 1969, 2000, 2004 Don Luke.1 commentsspectregunner

"The picture is another one of the aircraft assigned to
me (or me assigned to it). The ghost on the nose is unlike
any other that was painted on the AC47s. I cut stencils
to put this ghost on the nose because I didn't think the
ghosts painted on the nose looked mean enough. I stenciled
SPOOKY over the ghost but it came back from periodic
maintenance at Nha Trang with Casper on it. Our
maintenance supervisor insisted that we wear regular fatigues
with pressed creases in the legs and sleeves. We were glad to
see him rotate back to the States." -- Don Luke
